Zheng went up against Maria Kirilenko in the quarterfinal round. The 26-year old Chinese has only lost to Kirilenko once in five meetings, and took the first set with ease. Zheng's movement and flexible style helped her sweep to a 6-1 first set win. The Russian player put up a battle in the second set, but Zheng won it 6-3 and advanced to the Australian Open semifinals. She is the first Chinese player to make the last four of a tennis grand slam.
