Patrick Lam wins equestrian gold for HK

The equestrian competitions of the 11th National Games wrapped up on Tuesday.

Patrick Lam Lap suen won Hong Kong's 2nd gold medal at this National Games with a flawless porformance in the men's equestrian jumping individual competition.

There were total of 20 riders taking part in the jumping competition. Four of them quit the morning's first round and one was eliminated. Lam shared 1st place with Chen Jingchuan from Guangdong after the first round.

The second round competition start at 3pm. Lam and his horse " Forrester's Boy" cleared all 24 fences. That made Lam the only competitor among 15 to have a penalty free round. And that earned him the gold medal.

Last National Games runner up Li Zhenqiang from Guangdong trailed four points behind to gain the silver.

Lam's teammate, Cheng Man kit earned the bronze.

Lam from Hong Kong was born in Graz, Austria in 1983. He has been riding horses since he was a teenager. Lam said he borrowed his horse "Forrester's Boy" from his girlfriend as his regular mount is being trained in Austria.

After the comptition, the 26 year old Lam said he had not expected to win and praised the performance of Forresters' Boy.

Lam is now ranked about 950th in the world and is relatively inexperienced. However, he hopes to compete in the Asian Games and even the 2012 London Olympics.
