Zhou Yu claims women's 500m K1 gold

The women's K1 race came down to a tight contest between Hunan's Zhou Yu and Zhong Hongyan from Zhejiang. Zhou took a narrow lead at the 250 meter mark but Zhong kept in contention, and shadowed Zhou all the way to the finish.

This race stirred some excitement among the spectators on the water's edge, pushing the athletes on to the end of the race.

Both competitors turned on the speed at the end...they staged an exciting final sprint and both crossed the line side by side.

It was a close result, but Zhou Yu won the gold for Hunan with a time of 1 minute 54.018 seconds, Zhong took silver for Zhejiang, only four one hundredths of a second back.

Sichuan's Wang Feng claimed the bronze.
