The women's 20km walk produced some world-class results. Liu Hong, bronze medalist at the Berlin World Championships, and defending champion Bai Yanmin were among the competitors.
The 22-year-old Liu Hong took the bronze with a time of 1 hour, 29 minutes 10 seconds in Berlin. She brought home the first walk medal for Chinese women since Liu Hongyu and Wang Yan finished 1-2 in the Seville World Championships in 1999.
Liu's personal best was 1:27.17 in Beijing, she slumped to a fourth place finish to miss a elusive medal at the Olympic games.
But this time, Liu Hong barged into the Jinan Olympic Center stadium in first place. Her winning time of one hour, 28 minutes and 11 seconds ranks among the world's best. She's just two seconds from the mark set by Olympic champion and Russian world title holder Olga Kaniskinaset, who clocked 1:28:09 in Berlin.
