Pang Jiaying breaks Asian records in 100m freestyle

It's the 6th day of competition and swimmers broke two more Asian records in the pool on Thursday, making it a total of nine at this National Games.

World champion Pang Jiaying sank one of the records. She collected the gold medal in the women's 100m freestyle. The 2009 World Championships winner timed 53.13 seconds in the final to reset the Asian record of 53.84 by second-place Zhu Yingwen at the Beijing Olympics.

Pang is no stranger to record times. She and her national teammates seized gold at the 2009 Rome Worlds in seven minutes 42.08 seconds in the 4x200m freestyle relay, more than two seconds better than Australia's world mark set at the Beijing Olympics.

Pang will next represent Shanghai to join the 4x 100m medley relay.

After the race, Pang said the result was beyond her expectations. She had thought she could break the Asian record, but didn't think she could swim this fast.

Former Asian record holder Zhu Yingwen chalked up 53.86 to stand runner-up. The silver finish crushed Zhu's goal for a 10th gold medal in her National Games history. This could be Zhu's last National Games she considering retirement from the sport.

Runner-up Zhu said she felt no regrets, standing one step shy of the top of the podium. Zhu said she'd already accomplished her personal best, which marked a perfect ending for her career. Zhu's teammate Tang Yi from Shanghai,placed third.
