Tian Mengxu takes 1st gold in athletics

Tian Mengxu from Henan came from behind to overtake the tired front-runners in the 10,000 meter track and field event. He ran alone and unchallenged in the final 100 meters before crossing the line with a time of 28 minutes 15.06 seconds. Dong Guojian of Yunnan followed the winner in 28:17.60 and Yang Dinghong from PLA was third at 28:19.08. Qinghai's Ren Longyun holds the national record but he could only manage seventh in 28:31.86.

Tian Mengxu added a gold medal for Henan province, but his winning time did not threaten the national best. It was the first gold medal from athletics at the "willow leaf" shaped Jinan Olympic Center. The six-day track and field events will produce 44 golds in total.
