Wind change closes Iceland airport

Iceland's major international airport has closed for the first time since the eruption of the volcano on April 14th. This was due to shifting winds that blew the ash cloud westward, toward the capital Reykjavik.

Airport management says transatlantic flights on the national carrier are being rerouted via Glasgow in Scotland. The Reykjavik domestic airport was also closed as a result of the ash cloud. Iceland had previously been largely unaffected by the ash, because winds blew it towards Europe.

The shift in winds has left European airspace free of ash. All of British airspace was available after four small airports in Scotland reopened.
