Pakistan's hunt for Taliban

2010-03-27 14:38 BJT

Pakistan says it is regaining control from the Taliban in its border area with Afghanistan. But this comes with a price.

Pakistan's military held a funeral on Friday for one of its soldiers killed in operations in the Orakzai tribal region. The area is a major base for the Taliban's top commander, who is believed to have died in a US missile strike in January. In the Orakzai operation Pakistani military recaptured a checkpoint taken on Thursday night by militants. 32 insurgents were killed, with military deaths at five. The operation in Orakzai has been praised by the US, which says fighting extremists on the Pakistani side of the border is key to winning the war against the related Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan.
