UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon visits Chile

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon has visited the quake-hit Chilean city of Concepcion to see what help can be given. After meeting Chilean President Michelle Bachelet and President-elect Sebastian Pinera on Friday, Ban said he believes the Chilean government has the capacity to lead the country out of difficulty.

Ban Ki-moon says he is much encouraged to see volunteers building temporary shelters for people. He believes the Chilean government does not have problems providing food to quake survivors. He also thinks the UN's ten-million-US-dollar support will help provide much needed equipment. The UN is continuing to assess the need for additional relief in the region.

Ban Ki-Moon, United Nations Secretary-General, said, "The United Nations has proposed to conduct post disaster needs assessment within a month of time. I have already conveyed initial assessment report to Chilean government but this is, being an initial report only after seven days, we have to have a thorough assessment team conducting this one and we will have a better picture."
