Lunar New Year customs vary in different parts of China. In North China, people usually go to an annual fair. While in South and East China, there are other ways to celebrate the year of the Tiger.

In the "Celestial Street Fair" of Beijing, folk actors play the Five Immortals, believed to bring people good luck, a good job, longevity, happiness, and wealth. In Tianjin, such events also attract foreign tourists.

The Shanghai Expo mascot, Haibao, joined an Expo-themed lantern show to celebrate the new year. In the old town of Zhouzhuang, colorfully dressed locals performed the ancient custom "Whipping Clay Cattle", hoping for a bumper harvest. And, in southwestern Guizhou Province, families decorate houses with auspicious tiger adornments to keep tough luck from entering the door.
