US citizens in Haiti face charges

Special Report: Strong Quake Hits Haiti |

Haitian authorities are considering how to deal with a group of American missionaries accused of trying to illegally take children out of the country.

The communications Minister says a local judge is reviewing the evidence against the group of five men and five women. She says the judge will decide whether the Americans will be tried in Haiti or if they should be sent back home to the US for trial.

The ten were caught late Friday while they were about to cross the border to enter the Dominican Republic with 33 children. They admitted they had not obtained the proper documents for the children, but denied any wrongdoing, saying they were only trying to help vulnerable orphans. However, most of the children said their parents are still alive and some could give contact information for their families.
