Special Report: Strong Quake Hits Haiti |
Thirty-three Haitian orphans have arrived in France, into the welcoming arms of their new parents. All had been adopted prior to the devastating earthquake. But most of the remaining children are not as lucky. They are either starving, suffering trauma, searching for parents, or even disappearing from hospitals.
The 33 orphans left Haiti and arrived in France on Friday evening.
French First Lady Carla Bruni Sarkozy welcomed them in a show of support from the French government.
After going through the administrative formalities, the families were keen to get their little ones out of the airport and away from the media spotlight.
The Haiti earthquake may have left thousands of children orphaned. They join those children who lost parents in previous disasters or were abandoned in the nation's long-running political strife.
The UN Children's Fund remains very concerned about the situation of children in Haiti, particularly those who have become separated from their parents or caregivers.
Tamar Hahn, UNICEF Spokesman, said, "I just came back from Port-au-Prince. Children there are really living in desperate situation... situation."
And UNICEF is warning of missing children in Haiti. It says in the past ten days, 15 children have disappeared from the hospitals of Port au Prince.
UNICEF says the Haitian government has been informed of the reports and is investigating them. The country has also increased its presence and vigilance at exit points to prevent children being taken out illegally.
Twenty-nine organizations, including UNICEF, are taking steps to clamp down on child abductions.
