Main distribution of current Chinese peacekeepers ( 2010-01-19 )

Currently, more than 2,100 Chinese peacekeepers are conducting operations in 10 task areas of UN peacekeeping missions throughout the world. The following is the main distribution of the Chinese peacekeepers in action.

-- Democratic Republic of Congo

China first participated in UN peacekeeping missions in the Democratic Republic of Congo in April 2003.

Its 10th peacekeeping team to the African country, comprising 175 military engineers and 43 medical staff, arrived in DRC's eastern city of Bukavu in July 2009 for an eight-month UN peacekeeping mission.

-- Liberia

China joined the peacekeeping mission in Liberia in December 2003 under a resolution of the UN Security Council.

Its ninth mission to the west African nation, comprising 275 military engineers, 240 transportation troops and 43 medical staff, arrived in Liberia in August 2009.

Chinese peacekeeping police have also been sent to Liberia.

-- Lebanon

China sent its first UN peacekeeping forces to Lebanon in 2006.

The sixth team currently there comprises 275 military engineers and 60 medical staff.

-- Haiti

In October 2004, the Chinese government dispatched a team of 125 anti-riot police to Haiti, China's first overseas anti-riot team for a UN peacekeeping mission.

In June 2009, the eighth team, also comprised of 125 anti-riot police, arrived in Haiti for an eight-month mission.

In September 2009, a peacekeeping police team of 17 police arrived in the country on rotation.

-- Sudan

In 2006, China sent a team of 435 troops to southern Sudan for a UN peacekeeping mission.

In November 2007, a contingent of 140 military engineers arrived in Sudan's Darfur region.

The 315-member third peacekeeping team arrived in Darfur in September 2009.

In November 2009, the sixth team sent to southern Sudan arrived with 435 peacekeepers.

China has also sent military observers and peacekeeping police to the African country on behalf of the UN.
