Russia, US to restart arms treaty talks

2010-01-13 14:47 BJT

Moscow is set to restart talks with Washington on a new arms control treaty this month. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, made the comment in Moscow on Tuesday.

Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister, said, "The talks will resume. We reckon this will take place in the second half of January. The negotiating teams are doing homework now because a document of this size and significance should be judicially and even editorially checked to prevent different interpretations in the Russian and English texts. The work is underway and as soon as it is completed we'll announce the dates of signing."

The new deal will succeed the 1991 Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, or START, which expired last December 5th. The two countries had previously hoped to reach a deal before the end of the year.

In late December, Moscow said it wanted Washington to share detailed data about the sea-and land-based systems, the US plans to introduce.

The systems would replace plans to place interceptor missiles in Poland and a radar in the Czech republic.
