Fisherman's Wharf: Multifunctional tourist attraction in Macao

My colleague Xu Zhaoqun is now at Fisherman's Wharf, one of the many beautiful scenic spots in the small city of Macao. I think it should be familiar to those who have been here before. The Wharf is also seen as a symbol of the local tourism's development.

Question 1: Hello Zhaoqun, can you tell us something more about the beautiful wharf?

-- Yes, I'd love to share my experiences in such a lovely place with all of you. Fisherman's Wharf is actually a multi-functional compound, with an area of more than 1 hundred and ten thousand square meters.. About X years ago, the local casino moguls decided to build a brand new tourist destination. Then they spent five years, and more than 1 hundred and ten Macao patacas, about ?? US dollars on the Wharf. You can find the miniatures of ancient western buildings, a circus, shops, restaurants and conference center. And it 's also a good place for ordinary tourists, as some of the restaurants are not expensive at all. More impressive is that the entire compound is built on land reclaimed from the sea. I think this is also the Macao people's innovative way of doing things.

Question 2: You mentioned innovation just now. This is a big buzzword nowadays. How important do you think innovation is for the small city with a simple economic structure?

-- Good question. As we know, the gaming industry contributes a large portion of the local economy. But a simple economic structure means you may be more fragile once hit by any impact from outside. The central government encourages the SAR to achieve a moderately diversified economy. The policy is there already, but how to diversify needs innovative minds. Some local people are used to the status quo. Any changes mean they have to give way to something new. Also, the simple economic structure leads to the absence of professionals in other areas. But opportunities do exist, while the connection among the cities in the Pearl River Delta economic zone are getting closer and closer. Macao is also a highly internationalized city, with well-educated people. I am sure Macao's future is a bright one.
