WHO unveils revised AIDS guidelines

2009-12-01 13:17 BJT

It's been nearly three decades since the world's first diagnosed case of HIV. Today, 33 million people are living with the virus.

The World Health Organization, or WHO, revised its treatment guidelines for AIDS patients on Monday.

The UN health body recommends using two other less toxic yet equally effective anti-retrovirals. In addition, it urged patients to start anti-retrovirals earlier.

The best time to start treatment is before patients become unwell or show signs of infection.

To prevent mother-to-child transmission, HIV-positive pregnant women are encouraged to use the drugs from 14 weeks into pregnancy and continue until the end of breast-feeding.
