Special Report: US Army Base Deadly Shooting |

The Fort Hood military base has been hit hard by growing strain on the Army from multiple combat deployments.

Fort Hood has had the highest soldier suicide rate among US Army bases from the time the US-led invaded Iraq in 2003. Since that year, more than 75 Fort Hood personnel have committed suicide.

Nearly a third of soldiers returning from combat suffer mental health ailments including depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress.

Those who treat the mentally ill, including doctors such as Hasan, are not immune from the symptoms.
