US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton plans to seek clarification from Russia on its position if Washington and its allies should decide to press on with sanctions against Iran on its nuclear program.

Clinton arrived in Moscow on Monday. She will hold talks today with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and President Dmitry Medvedev. Afghan and American efforts to defuse an anti-missile race in Europe are also on the agenda. Medvedev has said sanctions against Iran could be the last resort if Tehran fails to ease international suspicions over its nuclear weapons. But the Russian President has yet to commit Moscow to joining any specific sanctions.

On Monday, Iran dismissed a US warning that major powers would not wait forever for Tehran to fully verify that its nuclear program was for peaceful uses, saying threats or deadlines would have no impact.
