Urumqi begins trials for July 5th riot

Defendants suspected of being involved in the July 5th riot in Urumqi, capital of Northwest China's Xinjiang Ugyur Autonomous Region, are now being tried.

The trial started on Monday morning at the City Intermediate People's Court of Urumqi.

A total of seven defendants are on trial. They have been charged with various crimes including, premeditated murder, arson and looting. They are the first group of people implicated in the July 5th riot to stand trial. We will bring you the latest updates as the results become available.
