Among the four pilots of the Snow Dragon, Xie Jieying is the only female, and the first ever woman to helm the ship. CCTV reporter tells us about this 27 year old Shanghai lady's life on the giant glacial navigator.

A graduate of Shanghai Maritime University, Xie Jieying is a licensed Third Officer with practical experience on the sea. In addition to piloting the Snow Dragon four hours per day during its mission, she has had to overcome more difficulties than her male counterparts.

Xie said, "I don't feel any discomfort here. I'm used to life on the ship. And I like it."

Like most women her age, Xie takes a lot of snacks with her. She can't help but to worry about her skin, fearing that the ultraviolet light near the South Pole will have a strong effect. And she says she will definitely miss her family.

The 26th Antarctic Expedition team has 11 additional female members. The Snow Dragon's captain says there are not many differences between the men and women in terms of their research missions. Special considerations will only be given the ladies on rare occasions.
