Special Report: Hu attends UN, G20 Summits |
The UN Security Council has affirmed its commitment to a world free of nuclear weapons at a summit in New York. The Council also set up a broad framework for reducing global nuclear dangers.
In resolution 1887 passed at the summit, the Council calls on countries to sign and ratify the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. It also calls on them to create additional deterrence for withdrawal from the treaty.
The Security Council called on all countries to avoid conducting nuclear tests and urged them to sign the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty.
While backing the right of nations to peaceful use of nuclear energy, the resolution calls for stronger safeguards to reduce the likelihood that peaceful nuclear programs can be diverted to a weapons program, as well as stricter national export controls on sensitive nuclear materials.
