The United Nations has concluded a day summit on climate change. Many world leaders were on hand to discuss their efforts to tackle the issue.

Some developed countries also expressed their readiness to help developing countries cut emissions.

UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon urged world leaders to take quick action to ensure a successful outcome at the upcoming UN climate conference in Copenhagen in December.

Ban Ki-moon, UN secretary-general, said, "Failure to reach agreement in Copenhagen would be morally inexcusable, economically short-sighted, and politically unwise. We cannot go down this road."

China vowed to help by setting a new target to rein in the growth of carbon emissions as the economy develops.

Hu Jintao, Chinese President, said, "We will endeavor to cut carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP by a notable margin by 2020 from the 2005 level."

Much attention was fixed on US President Barack Obama's first UN speech, where he said the United States was "determined to act".
