Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo has met US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi in Washington. The pair stressed the importance of both countries working together on economic and environmental issues.
Wu Bangguo's US visit is the first of its kind by a top Chinese legislator over the past 20 years. Speaking at a joint news conference, Wu Bangguo said the main purpose of his viist is to promote further growth of China-US relations. He expressed the belief that his US visit will inject new impetus to the bilatral ties.
Pelosi recalled her visit to China four months ago. She said the visit was an opportunity to better understand China's efforts to environment and climate change issues. She pointed out great potentials exist for the two countries to conduct close cooperation in economy, politics, culture, environment fields. Pelosi said it is important for the United States and China to forge mutual understanding on the climate change and the global financial crisis.
Wu Bangguo is expected to meet President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during his week-long US visit. The US is the final leg of his three-nation tour which also took him to Cuba and the Bahamas.
