At the beginning, Huangmei opera started out with two-role or three-role mini-operas. As a "Dan" role, the hardest show is "Goodbye at the Hotel". The first half of the opera was about adultery. The second half was a murder witnessed by their Wei Dasuan. The opera was banned because its subject matter was about adultery and murder. It was a tale of sin and punishment: Those who cheat will be cheated. It was banned until the victory of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression in 1945. When the whole of China was celebrating the victory, the KMT government lifted the ban on Huangmei Opera and allowed the artists to perform in the cities. At that time, the 15-year-old girl called Yan Hongliu(Yan Fengying) started to learn "Goodbye at the Hotel". She was striving to perform and becoming widely popular at Anqing.
