Topic 1. Pension system reform

Medical reform can be the most difficult thing to do in any country. In China, the public are expecting the one-year-old plan to play an increasingly important role in terms of improving their well-being.

My colleague Tian Wei was at the Great Hall of the People to hear what the Ministry of Health has to say about this.

 

Topic 2. Healthcare reform

All people are born with dignity. Individual liberty is the precondition for social progress. But the income gap is widening. Farmers, pensioners,migrant workers and their children do not have a level playing field. Their rights and dignity must be restored and protected. This most solemn promise by Premier Wen Jiaobao has captured headlines and appeals to the hearts and minds of millions.

In his annual work report speech at the National People's Congress Friday, Premier Wen Jiabao devoted considerable attention to the need to improve living conditions for China's 150 million urban migrant workers.

For the parents among them, the most encouraging comment must be the premier's promise to gradually ensure their children receive the same education as urban residents. Of course, there's a long way to go.
