The annual media fanfare about the APEC summit seems to set a new tone for the agenda this time in Pusan in the Republic of Korea. Free trade, counter-terrorism and fighting natural disasters such as bird鈥檚 flu and Tsunami are the major issues under discussion. Chinese President Hu Jintao calls for leaders of the 21 member economies to adopt an open mind in facilitating trade liberalization. He urges parties concerned to hold constructive dialogue on disputes over energy and currency. Other contentious issues include agricultural subsidies and protection of intellectual property rights. Mr. Roh Wuxuan, the ROK President, says in his keynote speech that more efforts need to be made to produce a big community and to take on new challenges. Participants of the meeting converge in Pusan to review the agenda of the 1994 Bogor Goals.

Hu Jintao promotes win-win cooperation
In the port city of Busan in South Korea, President Hu Jintao has delivered a speech at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation CEO Summit. President Hu highlighted China's stance on win-win cooperation. And he also urged APEC member economies to strengthen mutual understanding through communication and cooperation.
President Hu Jintao delivered a speech entitled "An Open Mind for Win-Win Cooperation" at the summit.
The Chinese president pledged to strengthen energy dialogue and cooperation with all countries, to jointly help maintain world energy security and stability.
President Hu also pointed out that the global trade imbalance should be viewed from a dialectical perspective, and in the context of world economic development. Hu Jintao also noted that China would make further contributions toward a sustained expansion of global trade; yhis, by changing the mode of foreign trade growth, increasing imports, and enhancing the protection of intellectual property rights.
The Chinese president said a solid foundation for win-win cooperation was "deepening mutual trust and expanding trade and economic exchanges". President Hu then delivered a four-point proposal to realize win-win cooperation.
Hu said, "First, building a harmonious world with an open mind is a basic prerequisite for win-win cooperation. Second, we should vigorously promote trade and investment liberalization and facilitation on the basis of mutual trust. Third, as another important avenue to win-win cooperation, we should use dialogue and consultation to seek a proper settlement of disputes. And (fourth) strengthening solidarity and coordination, and maintaining security and stability -- is an effective guarantee for win-win cooperation."
President Hu arrived in Busan, the second largest city in South Korea, on Thursday. He will be attending the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
Leaders address summit in Busan
Several other national leaders also addressed the CEO Summit in Busan, where about 800 business leaders from around the Pacific Rim had gathered. They stressed the need for an adequate investment environment and a knowledge-based economy, as well as vigilance against the rising threat of bird flu.
Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong delivered a keynote speech entitled "ICT and the knowledge-based economy." He noted that throughout the world economy, globalization and rapid technological advances are transforming every product and service.
Peru President Alejandro Toledo Manrique said his country offers a stable investment environment with policies based on international principles.
Meanwhile, the new regional threat from bird flu was also high on the agenda at Thursday's meetings. Indonesia's president warned of the devastating effects a human pandemic could wreak on the economies of the Asia-Pacific region.
Australian Prime Minister John Howard and Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Hsien Loong also touched on the issue. Howard said Australia is contributing four million US dollars to an APEC fund to fight the disease.
The CEO meeting has been held annually since 1996, and is now one of the most prominent events of the APEC forum.
The APEC CEO Summit has been officially recognized as a sideline event, gaining its current name during the APEC economic leaders' meeting in Auckland in 1999.
The theme of the current three-day event is "Entrepreneurship and Prosperity: Building a Successful Partnership in the Asia-Pacific Region."
