Turkish and Islamic art up for auction

Sotheby's is staging two major art auctions this week. Ancient artifacts will be up for grabs at the Arts of the Islamic World Sale. And the Contemporary Turkish Art Sale is selling works by modern-day artists in the region. So, why not do a little window shopping ourselves?

The auction house has gathered ancient artifacts dating back to the rise of Islam in the 7th century through the 19th century.

One of the highlights is this pink hand grenade with butterfly wings. Created  by a self-proclaimed anarchist artist, the piece displays the juxtaposition between conflicting ideas of war and peace.

The collection includes metalwork, ceramics, textiles, weaponry and paintings.

This intricately carved Ottoman Ivory and Turquoise-Inlaid Box dates back to the 16th century.

Alongside impressive swords and weapons, ancient ceramics are being auctioned off. Fabrics are another major focus of the auction.

For those who consider this 19th century portrait too old, here's another, more contemporary suggestion. It's "1881" by Taner Ceylan depicting a modern Turkish rebel.

Recurrent themes in contemporary Turkish art include modern Turkish politics and society, as well as the country's Ottoman past.
