China exported 86 million US dollars worth of films, TV programs, documentaries, variety shows and animation in 2009, representing an increase of 44 percent from a year earlier. The statistic shows a phenomenal growth in the times of economic downturn.

China has exported a total of 10,000 hours of movie and TV programs, with animation making up the largest percentage. The export of animation witnessed a 150 percent increase over 2008.

Private film and television companies in Beijing, Shanghai, and the provinces of Jiangsu, and Guangdong showed exceptional performance last year.

Zhou Hong, spokesperson of State Admin. Radio, Film and TV, said, "The financial sectors have become increasingly aware that cultural products can make money as well. Their investment in the field has facilitated the growth of cultural industries."

The programs are being exported to a wider range of regions, including over one hundred countries and regions in Asia, Europe, North America, Africa and Australia. Chinese animation, in particular, is popular in Africa.

Zhu Hong says that an award will be given to broadcasting companies, movie makers, TV stations for outstanding achievements.
