Chinese writer Liu Zhenyun's novel "Cellphone" had been adapted in 2003 into a comedy drama by Feng Xiaogang. Now, the same novel is the inspiration for the latest stage play of the same title. "Cellphone". It premiered at the Haidian Theatre in Beijing on Sunday night to a warm reception.

The stage play is visually exciting with flashy lighting, innovative sets, and dramatic confrontations. The play offers a new approach that is different from the cinematic version.

The role of women is given considerable weight in the new play. The four heroines, varying in age, occupation, and personality, all have different ideas, and attitudes toward marriage and love. Intriguing and insightful lines give the play a comedy boost.

Wei Xiaoping, director of "Cellphone", said, "I focus on their own emotions, everyone of them have their own perspectives on life, love and men."

Two of the heroines are played by well-known performers. But while some actors are amateurish, they deliver a professional performance, and the reception from theatre goers is warm as they find the show creative and arresting.
