Special Report: 7.1-magnitude Quake Hit Qinghai, China |
Searchers are racing against time to find as many survivors as possible within the 72-hour period following the quake. In two separate rescues, a boy and a teenage girl were pulled from collapsed buildings.
The boy was among three people buried under the rubble of the local telecommunication bureau. Members of a team of provincial public security firefighters used their hands to dig, as no heavy machinery had not arrived. The boy was freed after two-hours.
At another location, a teenage girl was rescued by firefighters from Xining city. They had to put out a fire in an adjacent building and make their way through toxic vapors in order to save the girl. She is now in stable condition at hospital.
