Newly soccer boss vows to tackle problems

The new director of the Chinese Football Association, Wei Di, gave his first news conference in Beijing.In a passionate speech he pledged to attack corruption, and lift the national team's low global ranking.

Wei Di is not hesitating to point out some of the most serious problems in Chinese soccer. He says the operation and administration of the country's professional leagues are primitive.

The performances of China's national teams are slipping as well. The men's squad is ranked Number 97 in the world, while the once-great women's outfit has fallen out of Top Ten. The future does not appear exceedingly bright, either, as the number of youth soccer players has shrunk dramatically. The sport is also dealing with disgrace, as a sweeping probe of match-fixing and bribery allegations has netted more than a dozen athletes and leaders.
