Special Report: Strong Quake Hits Haiti |

The UN Security Council has endorsed a proposal to send 35-hundred more peacekeepers to Haiti. The move aims to support the immediate recovery, reconstruction and stability in the quake-stricken country.

The UN Security Council unanimously adopted the resolution Wednesday, and endorses the recommendation to increase the organization's overall forces in Haiti. The new group of peacekeepers will include police officers and military personnel.

China's UN Ambassador Zhang Yesui, who is currently holding the Council's presidency, says the move will strengthen the organization's ability to restore order in Haiti. He is urging the UN to play a leading and coordinating role in the rescue and relief operation in the country.

Currently, there are nine thousand UN peacekeepers in Haiti, which will expand to more than 12 thousand after the new forces arrive. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon hopes member countries respond quickly in adding their troops.
