The first shipment of relief supplies from China has arrived in Haiti. The cargo should provide some very welcome help for quake survivors.

The humanitarian aid haul from China contains provisions urgently needed for relief work on the island.

Wu Heping, spokesman of Ministry of Public Security, said, "This bundle of relief supplies weighs 90 tons. It mainly contains much-needed items, such as medicines, food, tents, drinking water, and water-purification equipment."

A brief welcoming ceremony was held on the runway by the China Trade Office in Haiti, along with a team of Chinese peacekeepers.

The supplies will be quickly handed over to the Haitian government.

The aid is part of an relief package worth 30 million yuan announced by the Chinese government on Friday.

A second consignment of relief materials will be sent soon.
