Snow covers Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia

2010-01-11 08:45 BJT

Special Report: Snowy Northern Hemisphere |

A cold front is bringing misery to many parts of China. Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and north China's Inner Mongolia have been slammed by the heaviest snowstorms in a decade, disrupting traffic and damaging agricultural farming and livestock. Local governments and people are making every effort to relieve the situation.

In Xinjiang, more than 260-thousand people in the Tacheng and Altay regions have been affected.

50 thousand livestock in Altay have been without proper feed supply since the snow hit the region on Wednesday. Rescuers lead a team of camels carrying feed to the district immediately after the snow first struck.

Road 216 and 217 are the two main roads connecting other places with Altay. They had been shut down. Soldiers and local residents worked around the clock to clear the snow on the main roads. After 15 hours' continuous work, they have cleared a 140-kilometer section of roadway.
