Interview with advocacy adviser for UNAIDS China

2009-12-02 08:45 BJT

Mr. Ole Hansen, the advocacy adviser for UNAIDS China, now joins us on the phone.

1) Mr. Hansen, the total number of confirmed HIV/AIDS cases on the Chinese mainland since the mid-1980s reached 295,000 in May this year. Of that figure, some 43,000 people died. Do these figures indicate a potentially alarming situation that demands greater attention?

2) Each country, or region, has its own unique problems in dealing with HIV/AIDS. In your opinion, what are the unique challenges China faces in fighting the disease?

3) There have been improvements over the past years, both in public awareness, as well as with government recognition of the importance of treating HIV/AIDS. Compared with other countries, how would you rank China in the global campaign?

4) We can never say enough has been done to prevent the HIV epidemic. What measures do you recommend the Chinese government take up in the future?
