Current HIV/AIDS situation in China

2009-12-02 08:45 BJT

Since China reported its first HIV/AIDS case in 1985, the country has officially registered nearly 320,000 people who have the virus. But the figure seems to understate the current HIV/AIDS situation in the country.

It's the number of HIV/AIDS cases China has reported since 1985 till the end of October, 2009.

But according to a joint appraisal by the Health Ministry, the UNAIDS and the World Health Organization, the figure is double.

About 740,000 people are now living with HIV in China.

Among them, about 105,000 are AIDS patients.

The disease is especially common in some regions and among certain groups of people, such as homosexuals.
