Peking University's new admission measures have been under intense scrutiny from the public. The Ministry of Education is expressing support for the new move, but many have doubts regarding the fairness and supervision of the new practice.
70 percent of Chinese netizens are opposed to the new admission measure.
In an online poll conducted by China's leading web portal sina.com, objectors have expressed the belief that the system of a high school recommendation is unfair.
Wang Jintang, Beijing CPPCC member, said, "The root of the problem is concern over the measure's harm to equal education opportunity. Many people may be suspicious about whether the principal's power may be abused."
The former spokesman of the Education Ministry, Wang Xuming, has questioned the principals' ability to actually know each student well enough.
A parent said, "My child has never spoken with the principal once during high school. I think the recommendation will depend on the parents' abilities."
