Crackdown on fake money makes progress

A nationwide crackdown on fake money has seen steady progress since early this year. The Ministry of Public Security has released figures showing there were 2,200 cases across the country in which police seized fake notes with a total face value of 810 million yuan.

Farmers Xu Shaorong and Zhu Yingwu from Guangdong Province were sentenced to death for making and selling fake money worth nearly 100 million yuan. Their production and supply system of manufacturing notes, trading and transportation was busted by the police.

The Public Security Ministry said the east of Guangdong Province has long been a hotbed of counterfeit money crime. It's been the main source of fake money, about 90 percent of the nation's fake money comes from the province. The crime has spread across the country along main lines of transportation. Provincial capitals and economically flourishing cities have been distribution hubs for the fake money.

Jieyang city, Lufeng city and Shantou city in Guangdong Province are listed as key locations for the crackdown. In Jieyang city alone, Guangdong police have discovered fake money worth 100 million yuan in the past two years, accounting for 15 percent of the nation's counterfeit cash.

The province has mobilized law enforcement efforts from many departments, including those responsible for crimes in finance, social security, Internet and frontier defense for the investigations.

During the past 10 months, more than 4-thousand suspects have been arrested for making and selling counterfeit notes. These include 233 fugitives who had been at large for more than a decade. The criminal groups mainly consist of family members or hometown connections.
