2010-02-21 08:23 BJT

Attending a Temple Fair is one of the most common activities during the start of the lunar new year. For the first time, people in London are able to join in on the festive activity without going to China.

Britain's first Chinese New Year Fair kicked off at the Westfield Shopping Center on Friday.

Hosted by the Chinese Embassy in London, the fair created a Chinese festive atmosphere by displaying traditional art performances.

Like all temple fairs in China, London's is also packed with loads of merchandise and traditional Chinese snacks.

Children here are learning to play shuttle-cock.

And there are also games that are attracting adults.

Chen Xiaodong, official of Chinese Embassy in UK, said, "This is the first time that the embassy has hosted a temple fair. This is part of our effort to promote Chinese culture. We have held several Chinese new year activities before, but this is different. We hope more Britons can learn about China through it."

The Chinese New Year Fair will last two days. And the embassy says they would like to continue to hold the fair next year if conditions permit.
