Google urged to respect Chinese law

Chinese lawmakers, advisors and experts have urged Google to abide by local laws and regulations, saying the online search giant should not think it's an exception to China's clean-up campaign on the Internet.

The comments come a day after Google repeated it was standing firm on its decision to stop censoring search results and that it was prepared to leave the country if that was the only option.

But NPC deputy, Chen Zhonglin, says all countries have the right to scrutinize contents on the Internet to protect the interests of the state and its citizens.

While deputy director and secretary general of the China Society of WTO Studies, Zheng Zhihai, said checking what was on the Internet was a right granted by the WTO to its members.

While a researcher at the Development Research Center of the State Council repeated the point that China was not the only country to exercise its right to Internet supervision. Feng Fei added that China will not be much affected whether or not Google chooses to leave.
