Special Report: 2010 NPC & CPPCC Sessions |

A big part of everyday needs is having a home to live in. Given the emphasis this year on ensuring that basic necessities are met, soaring property prices have emerged as a number one concern for NPC deputies and CPPCC members. Many say more government efforts tackling different aspects of the problem are needed to bring prices down to reasonable levels. Zhou Sen, NPC Deputy, said, "Property developers' profits must be transparent. You've got to wonder how they make their profits if they are able to earn money whether it's a 5 percent or 30 percent discount they offer. The government should pay more attention to this problem."

Cao Dazheng, NPC Deputy, said, "The government should seriously crack down on land hoarding. The law rules that if a piece of land is left idle for a year, developers will be fined 20 percent of their transfer fees. We think the fine should be raised to half the transfer fee."

Wang Rugui, NPC Deputy, said,"More non-commercial types of housing should be built, such as affordable housing and low-rent housing. The government should allow more people to enjoy the benefits of living in these sorts of units."

Su Wenjin, NPC Deputy, said,"The government should strengthen supervision of construction and allocation of non-commercial housing, to stop those who do not qualify, from taking homes away from those who are eligible."
