Special Report: UN climate change conference in Copenhagen |

China says it hopes developed countries will their make decisions in accordance with the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol. While speaking at the climate conference in Copenhagen, the Chinese delegation repeated its call for common but differentiated responsibilities on the basis of the Convention.

World leaders held double-track negotiations at the climate conference. They called for developed countries that signed the Kyoto Protocol to discuss emission cuts after 2012. Those who didn't sign the agreement have been urged to discuss long-term and wider range emission cuts in accordance with the convention.

Developing countries also urged rich nations to take the lead and cut emissions by 25 to 40 percent from 1990 levels by 2020.

Yu Qingtai, China's Climate Change Ambassador, said, "According to calculations by scientists, more than 80 percent of the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere are the result of emissions by developed countries."

Meanwhile, China insists that developed countries should not shirk their responsibility on climate change.

Yu Qingtai said, "Developed countries should be providing financial support to developing countries, not out of charity, but because they should fulfill their legal obligations as the creators of the problem."

Chinese officials said the UN climate talks have entered a crucial stage since the proposal of two draft texts.
