Official: Wen's presence at the climate conference demonstrates China's commitment

The Chinese Vice Foreign Affairs Minister says Premier Wen Jiabao's presence at the climate conference in Copenhagen will demonstrate Beijing's commitment to fighting climate change.

At a news briefing in Beijing, Wang Guangya confirmed Premier Wen Jiabao will attend the Copenhagen conference. He said that shows the determination, confidence and political will of the Chinese government of its contribution to the protection of the global climate.

Wang Guangya, vice minister of Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs,said, "The Chinese government believes that the target of the climate change conference in Copenhagen is to have positive achievements on further implementing of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and its Kyoto Protocol."

Duan Jielong, director of the Treaty and Law Department of China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said China sees developed nations being insincere in their apparent commitment to help developing nations.

Duan Jielong, director in chief of Dept of Treaty & Law, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said, "Developed countries have been reluctant to put forward their proposals on the financial arrangement and this has become a major obstacle for the Copenhagen conference to achieve an agreement."

China has said rich countries should make emissions cuts of "at least 40 percent" versus 1990 levels by 2020.

Poor countries have so far offered cuts of about 14-18 percent from 1990 levels by 2020.
