Doctors are supposed to heal the wounded and rescue the dying. But that's not always the case. During the Japanese invasion of China, Japanese army doctors committed atrocious crimes against Chinese civilians by carrying out vivisection. Although over sixty years have passed, many of the medics involved in the practice continue to be tormented by the guilt of killing innocents. Yuasa Ken is one of them.
Here in Setagaya, Tokyo, this unassuming clinic is run by ninety-year-old Yuasa Ken. Tranquil as this clinic looks, Yuasa has not found inner peace since the crimes he committed over sixty years ago.
The Japanese invasion of China was in its fourth year in 1941...a time when army doctors were in great demand.
In October of that year, Yuasa completed his studies at a medical college, and was enlisted into the Twenty-Sixth Regiment.
Early the following year, he was dispatched to a Japanese field hospital in North China's Shanxi Province.
The fledgling doctor Knew that he'd be rained to carry out vivisections on Chinese prisoners of war.
Although psychologically prepared, Yuasa felt a great sense of shock the first time he put his knowledge to use.
Japanese Veteran Army Medic Yuasa Ken said, "When we entered the room, we found it was for vivisection. Two Chinese people were tied down. Then, some medical soldiers pushed them onto the operation table. They were screaming and desperately struggling, but it was no use. We eventually forced them onto the table. That scene has haunted me until today."
Three hours later, the two Chinese had had their arms removed and their intestines cut out. Over the next few years, Yuan carried out vivisections on seven occasions, and gradually got accustomed to the screaming.
After Japan surrendered in 1945, he was imprisoned in the provincial capital city of Taiyuan until 1956. When he was released, he shed tears of remorse before departing for his homeland.
Japanese Veteran Army Medic Yuasa Ken said, "I felt deceived by Japanese militarism. My hands are stained with the blood of Chinese people. I really hate myself. I'm really very sorry."
Besides running this clinic, Yuasa has dedicated himself to unveiling the true history of Japan's aggression in China over the past sixty years. He hopes this will wash away his sins and give him peace of mind.
