Editor’s forward: "Looking China" International Youth Film Project is co-organized by the Academy for International Communication of Chinese Culture (AICCC), Beijing Normal University and Huilin Foundation. The program focuses on the young participants’ personal experiences of Chinese culture and encourages them to discover and tell Chinese stories from their own perspectives.
As of the year 2018, students from 35 countries were invited to participate in the "Looking China" project. They were stationed in 11 municipalities, provinces and autonomous region here in China. Every filmmaker has worked out a 10-minute short film about Chinese culture around the topic of "Ecology, Biology, Lifeology."
The snow leopard, listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, is a large cat native to Central and South Asia. As of 2016, its global population was estimated at 4,678 to 8,745 mature individuals, around 40% of which live in China.
Global warming has brought new pressure for survival of the wild snow leopard, animals, such as leopards are gradually invading at higher altitudes and their habitats have overlapped with the snow leopard's. Apart from this, urbanization, illegal poaching and trading are all responsible for the decrease of snow leopards.
Artificial breeding of the snow leopard has been a challenge worldwide. After many failures, a snow leopard named Aoxue was born at Xining Zoo which is located in Qinghai province, northwest China. The birth of "little prince" has brought many visitors to the zoo and has made more people aware of the urgent situation.
We can learn further about the snow leopard from a short documentary "Little Princess" directed by Bala Murali Shingade. Just like Dame Jane Goodall, a UN Messenger of Peace, said "Only if we understand, can we care. Only if we care, will we help. Only if we help, shall they be saved."
