Editor’s forward: "Looking China" International Youth Film Project is co-organized by the Academy for International Communication of Chinese Culture (AICCC), Beijing Normal University and Huilin Foundation. The program focuses on the young participants’ personal experiences of Chinese culture and encourages them to discover and tell Chinese stories from their own perspectives.

As of the year 2018, students from 35 countries were invited to participate in the "Looking China" project. They were stationed in 11 municipalities, provinces and autonomous region here in China. Every filmmaker has worked out a 10-minute short film about Chinese culture around the topic of "Ecology, Biology, Lifeology."

The short film, ‘Hanging High,’ directed by Goh Jia Jing, produced by Liu Jia Rui, and supervised by Marta Pulk, features a man and a young woman cliff climbing team in Ziyun County, Guizhou Province.

The man Huang Xiao Bao, 56, and his teammate Luo Deng Ping, live near the magnificent Swallow-case Spiderman Cave where they routinely climb soaring high cliffs without using safety equipment, earning them recognition as “Spiderman” and “Spiderwoman.”

In a more stunning feat, the elder Huang is seen on video footage climbing a dangerous and death-defying cliff without wearing shoes. He’s barefoot and helmet-less. You can see him and his shoe-wearing teammate climbing the cliffs, knowing that one mistake that could lead to untimely deaths for them.

They are brave climbers, while birds and bats fly around them, causing greater suspense over their survival techniques. The Elder Huang also has a bad left leg, since he suffered from the ailment since he got sick at 3-years-old. But he continues to climb and insists that a bad leg has no impact, since he relies on his arms to take him higher and higher when climbing.

By witnessing such acts of bravery performed by Mr. Spiderman, viewers can feel more inspired not to allow adversity to overwhelm them and to maintain a spirit of hope and courage at all times in their lives.
