Editor's foreword: "Looking China" International Youth Film Project is co-organized by the Academy for International Communication of Chinese Culture (AICCC), Beijing Normal University and Huilin Foundation. The program focuses on the young participants’ personal experiences of Chinese culture and encourages them to discover and tell Chinese stories from their own perspectives.
As of the year 2017, students from all over the world were invited to participate in the project. They were stationed in 12 municipality, provinces and autonomous regions here in China. Every filmmaker has worked out a 10-minute short film about Chinese culture around the topic of "Craftsmanship·Inheritance·Innovation.”
In the short film, The Circle of Life, directed by Ines Roulaud and produced by Li Yaling, viewers can follow up on Mr. Zhou Xiaochao, a teacher at Beijing No. 2 Experimental Primary School.
His young students appear to adore and respect him as he gives hands-on lectures, such as taking field trips to the Forbidden City at Tian'anmen Square.
During an interview, Mr. Zhou explains that all teachers should place students in their circle of life, but as we all know when we grow older that it’s the students who should put teachers in their circles of life.
Teaching young children remains a bigger challenge, since they are full of energy and passions, so they can be easily distracted. But Mr. Zhou takes on the challenge to inspire them so they can learn more.
Mr. Zhou loves to tell stories, just like his mother, a teacher. He also loves to sing pop songs and change up the lyrics so students can learn faster in memory games.
Many teachers are reluctant to teach young children, since it can be so difficult to keep them focused on classroom topics, but Mr. Zhou developed his unique methods to overcome the challenge and it’s worth taking a look at the movie to learn more about him and his teaching philosophy.
