Editor's foreword: "Looking China" International Youth Film Project is co-organized by the Academy for International Communication of Chinese Culture (AICCC), Beijing Normal University and Huilin Foundation. The program focuses on the young participants’ personal experiences of Chinese culture and encourages them to discover and tell Chinese stories from their own perspectives.
As of the year 2017, students from all over the world were invited to participate in the project. They were stationed in 12 municipality, provinces and autonomous regions here in China. Every filmmaker has worked out a 10-minute short film about Chinese culture around the topic of "Craftsmanship·Inheritance·Innovation.”
The movie "The Spirit of Tai Chi", directed by Flora Chilton and produced by Pang Xiujun and Guo Yenan, depicts the daily life of Tai Chi coach, Xu Jiawen. She is also a college student from the Shanghai University of Sports. Her life-goal is traveling to different countries to perform Tai Chi.
Tai Chi is an internal Chinese martial art, which means supreme ultimate and appears in both Taoist and Confucian Chinese philosophies. According to Xu, practicing Tai Chi can keep her mind calm and peaceful.
She also plays Guzheng, a traditional Chinese instrument. In her opinion, Chinese women are more free today than in the past. They can pursue their happiness. More importantly, women are not weak, they can be independent and strong.
The movie is well filmed, the story line is clear. We can see hard work, persistence and ambition of the young coach. It’s a good short movie for everyone to watch.
