According to statistics released by National Bureau of Statistics on Friday, China's overall migrant workforce numbers came to 281.71 million in 2016, increasing by 1.5 percent from the previous year.
The average age of workers was 39, and the post-1980's generation have gradually become the majority, accounting for almost half.
The average monthly salary was nearly 475 US dollars, an increase of 6.6 percent over 2015. Workers in eastern coastal areas still earn more than those in the west.
The number of migrant workers in the manufacturing and construction industry decreased by 2.2 percent, while the service sector saw 2.2 percent growth.
That's partly because China's economy is shifting its growth from investment to consumption. Many workers are leaving assembly lines and construction sites to take on jobs in the service sector, such as in distribution and retail.
