Trump had previously promised to "get tough" on China, but during his first 100 days a new reality set in. Trump's rhetoric on China has improved dramatically.

Recently he has said he wouldn't speak to Taiwan's leader without consulting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in advance, and that he wouldn't break with the One China policy.

That's quite a shift from December 2, when he not only took a phone call from the leader Tsai Ing-wen, but also referred to Tsai as the "President of Taiwan".

More reversal has been witnessed since President Trump and Chinese President Xi met in Florida in early April.

The meeting is widely perceived as a positive engagement between the two leaders, and has changed Trump's China-bashing tone, leaving behind his branding of China as a currency manipulator and instead talking of having better trade terms.
